Milky Way

The Milky Way bar was created in 1918 by Frank C. Mars. It was originally manufactured in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Why did it get the name of our galaxy? Well, the name was taken from a very famous malted milk drink (milkshake) at that time. It got so popular that already in 1924, the Milky Way was introduced nationally and sold $800.000 that year!

Marsars

In 1932, son of that American candy maker Frank C. Mars, Forrest Mars, decided to creat another chocolate bar brand. He rented a factory in Slough, England and began manufacturing a chocolate bar. It was modelled after his father's Milky Way bar which was already very popular in the USA at that time. His chocolate bar consisted of nougat and caramel coated with milk chocolate (in its original British version). An American version of the Mars had nougat and toasted almonds covered in milk chocolate; later, caramel was added to the recipe as well.

Snickers

The Snickers chocolate bar is sold all over the world these days. But how did it all begin? Here's the story! It was introduced in 1930 by the founders of the Milky Way bar. At that moment they were already very popular and took a chance to create another brand. The Mars family owned a farm in Tennessee that bred race horses and their favouite one was called Snickers. So they decided to give that name to their new chocolate. The Snickers chocolate bar consists of nougat, peanuts, and caramel with a chocolate coating. It is interesting to know that in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Snickers was sold under the brand name Marathon until 1990.

Picnik

The Picnik was first released in Australia in 1958 in the Cadbury chocolate bar range. This chocolate consists of milk chocolate and peanuts, covering chewy nougat, caramel, biscuit and puffed rice. The UK and Indian versions differ from the Australasian version in that they also contain raisins. A marketing slogan for the Picnic, released in the early 2000s, was "Deliciously ugly". During the 1970s the Australian slogan for Picnic was "More like a banquet than a picnic". Picnic is manufactured by Cadbury UK.

Bounty

The Bounty bar was introduced in 1951 in the United Kingdom and Canada. It is manufactured by Mars, Incorporated and sold internationally. Bounty has a coconut filling enrobed with milk chocolate. Some people say that it was named after the Bounty Islands that are territorially part of New Zealand. The islands were discovered by captain William Bligh and then he named them after his ship HMS Bounty.

Kit Kat

Kit Kat was first launched in 1935 by Rowntree’s, a candy company based in York, England. Today, it is owned by Nestlé, a world famous chocolate brand. Kit Kat is a type of chocolate that is made up of three layers of wafers. The wafers are covered with a layer of chocolate inside and out. Each whole piece is considered a “finger.” The first Kit Kat chocolate bar was a 4 finger chocolate wafer bar. The name of this delicious candy comes from the Kit Kat club, named after  Christopher Catling. Catling held a famous political and literary club in his London pie shop in the 17th century. In the 1950’s the brand started expanding almost all over the world. In 1957 the slogan “Have a break, have a Kit Kat” was used alongside their TV commercials to promote the bar as workers chocolate. Nowadays, Kit Kat is famous worldwide and has different types of flavours.

It was first produced in the United Kingdon in 1967, and appeared in the United States in 1979. Twix had a name Raider in Europe for many years but it was changed to Twix in 1991.
