England got its name from the Germanic tribe called the Angles. It derived from the Old English name Englaland, which means land of the Angles.

Now England is divided into 9 regions and 48 ceremonial counties and is governed by the Parliament of the UK.

Some basic information

CLIMATE

England has a temperate maritime climate: it is mild (in winter the temperatures don't go much lower than 0°C and in summer - not higher than 32°C). Rainfall is higher in the west, and parts of the Lake District receive more rain than anywhere else in the country.

FOLKLORE

Common English folkloric characters include pixies, elves, trolls, goblins. There are also many different legends: about Offa of Angel and Wayland the Smith, Robin Hood and his Merry Men of Sherwood.

CUISINE

Traditional examples of English food include: Yorkshire pudding, Sunday roast and gravy. Other popular meals are fish and chips and the full English breakfast, which consists of bacon, sausages, grilled tomatoes, fried bread, baked mushrooms, beans and eggs.

ARCHITECTURE

There are a lot of monuments that were erected during the prehistoric period: Stonehenge, Castlerigg, Rudston Monolith, etc.

It was the Romas who founded the first cities and towns such as London, Bath, York, Chester.

After the Norman Conquest in 1066 various castles were built in England: the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, Durham Castle, Warwick Castle.

GEOGRAPHY

England is the closest part of mainland Britain to the European continent.

The River Severn is the longest river in Great Britain, even though the River Thames is the longest one in England and flows through southern England including London.

Most of England's landscape consists of low hills and plains. The northern uplands include the Pennines.
